Heidi Baker:The Little Woman Who’s Changing the World
By Garry Lovette
I have never met anyone quite like Heidi Baker. I had the privilege
of being in a service with her about three years ago as she came to share a word
that God had given her for our church. To look at Heidi Baker, you would probably
think that she’s a little “school Marm”. She probably isn’t 120 pounds soaking wet…but
don’t let her small size fool you. At 46 years old, she and her husband Roland have
accomplished in just a few short years what it would take most countries to accomplish
over several decades.
Heidi & Roland Baker make their home and ministry in the country of Mozambique,
near the area called Pemba. Where most people would look upon this place as a hopeless
cause, they out of obedience have moved there with their children and are literally
turning the modern-day church on it’s collective ear. When Heidi Baker came to my
home church in Florence, Alabama, she made me very uncomfortable. For you see, I
had never looked into the face of Jesus until I saw Heidi Baker. This was a woman
who has been with God. There was such an anointing on her the day that she spoke
at our church that many times she would “bow” over almost seeming to be in pain.
She was not in pain as we might think, but under such a strong anointing from The
Holy Ghost that she found it hard to stand upright and speak in a normal way. Recently,
on a trip to Ohio to preach at a conference sponsored by Jim & Michael Ann Goll,
Heidi had to preach about half the time laying on her face in the floor. The Power
and Anointing of The Holy Spirit would not permit her to stand. This anointing no
doubt was the result of much prayer and fasting. In Mozambique, many refer to her
as “the dirt lady” because she will literally lay with her face in the dirt for
hours at a time crying out to God to save the people of Mozambique. Her prayers
have not gone unheeded. In the few short years that Heidi & Roland have been in
Mozambique, they have established over 8,000 churches in the bush, established four
feeding centers, opened schools, and been a tremendous light to a very dark part
of the world that is predominantly Muslim.
Heidi Baker is quick to point out that it is not her or her family or her helpers
that have done this, but it is the blessing and favor of God that has performed
this. She is quick to give God all the glory that He so richly deserves. Most people
in the modern-day church would set themselves up as a “superstar” in the church.
They would have a “megachurch” with cutting-edge technology. They would have their
latest book available, and with a proper donation to their ministry, would even
send it to you. That is exactly opposite of what Heidi Baker is about. Never one
to want the spotlight, many times she will turn down lucrative speaking engagements
for small, out-ofthe- way ministry opportunities for little or no pay.
The day that she came to my church, I realized that I was nowhere even close
to God as this lady was. As I said before, she made me uncomfortable. (I’ve seen
grown men begin to wail and to weep at the mear touch of her hand upon them.)
Heidi Baker is one of the people in the Kingdom that really “gets it”. She realizes
that her life is worth nothing if she doesn’t spend her whole life engrossed in
doing the Father’s will. Many times when she ministers and invites people to come
up to be healed or set free, she will ask the many orphans that she and her family
take care of to come and to lay hands upon them. She is quick to instruct that she
doesn’t have to touch anyone herself, but that God can use the children just as
powerfully as herself. They have seen thousands come to Christ, receive supernatural
healings (including the growing back of limbs) and they have documented proof of
53 people being raised from the dead through the ministry of several who have mentored
under Heidi & Roland. Being around Heidi Baker will change you. You begin to question
whether your life is being lived to the fullest. You begin to wonder if you are
in the perfect Will of God.
As I child, I would always pray that God would give me the Faith & Anointing
to be and preach like D.H. Queener. In 2006, my prayer has been, “Lord, give me
the Faith & courage of Heidi & Roland Baker, and let me turn my world upside down,
just as they are doing.” I will tell you from personal experience…Be careful what
you ask for!
